How to buy wine like a boss

It can be intimidating buying wines in a store as there is an overwhelming amount of choice and you may lack the confidence to engage in a conversation about wine. I used to be terrified of buying wine and would always rely on others to pick the wines as I didn’t feel confident talking about it. I started to be more mindful of the wine I was consuming, which helped me understand what I like, why I like it and how to communicate my preferences. I feel a lot more confident talking about wines in stores and so can you.

Here are my 5 top tips to help you buy wine like a boss:

  1. Find a store you trust - explore your local area and engage in conversations with your local wine stores. Find the one that resonates with you.

  2. Consider the occasion and budget - there are different wines for different occasions, we can’t always be drinking champagne!

  3. Food Pairing - let your local store know what you are going to eat and they can guide you on pairings.

  4. Be curious and open minded - it is easy to keep buying the same wines but there are so many wines out there that are delicious. Keep exploring and be open to suggestions from your local wine store.

  5. Be intentional - when you are trying a wine think about whether you like it and why. This helps you better understand your taste preferences as well as helps who ever is serving you in the wine store.
